RAW

MEDIUM-LENGTH / PRODUCTION

CRU / RAW is a medium-length documentary that accompanies the preparations and execution of the newest performance by artist Paula Garcia, who has been dedicated to practical and theoretical performance research in Brazil and other countries for the past 15 years.

The performance that bears the same name as the film consisted in the construction of a frontal crash of two cars driven by the artist Paula Garcia and a professional stunt double, which was held on March 17, 2020 in a shed in SP. The 250 guests were warned that they would no longer be able to attend the performance at the venue, as the City of São Paulo, through Decree nº 59.283, declared an emergency situation in the municipality since Tuesday (17/03) due to the pandemic caused by the Covid-19 virus. Starting from this new context, the technical team prepared for a live broadcast that could be watched by the invited audience from their homes.

On the morning of March 17, project collaborators began to publicize the performance on social media. An audience between 550 and 600 people watched the live broadcast, which, due to the pandemic, became a fundamental part of reflecting on this performance in this context in which the whole world is in a state of emergency.

que o todo o mundo se encontra em estado de emergência.

The creation of this confrontation creates multiple symbolic developments and puts the system with its visible and invisible forces in check. Here symbolized by the collision of cars, and also, by the invisible threat of the virus that would transform everyone's life for many months. The performance seeks to promote cracks in the understanding of the body and takes what is accidental and random through devices that extract from the insecurity, uncertainty and risk another idea of the body. We highlight the limits of the body and its inherent fragility.

Journalist Nina Rahe wrote an article for Select magazine from her experience of watching the performance in person at ARCA. The channel ARTE 1, prepared a story with images of the performance and an interview with Paula Garcia recorded by cell phone from her home during the quarantine. The video of the live broadcast was selected to be shown at Itaú Cultural under the Arte como Respiro program.
