SYNOPSIS
The documentary ‘PRESENT BODY’ investigates contemporaneity through the body and its many possibilities for expression and meaning. The film deals with the symbolism of the body through one of the main contemporary artistic expressions - Performance - which several scholars underline as a new ideology, typical of our time. “Present Body” delves into the works and thinking of several artists and specialists, from Brazil and the world, who use the body as the raw material for their creations.
The film features performance artists who manage to unite different expressions in a unique and singular way, raising new discourses that circulate and inhabit the contemporary imagination, such as issues of gender and identity, social conflicts, cultural interdictions, colonization, among others. The multiple bodies signal new ways of being in the world, where cultural, identity and political signs coexist on a scaled skin with great potential for transformation. This mosaic includes archival images of key artists, new and established artists, such as Ayrson Heráclito, Jo Clifford, Rodrigo Braga, Ana Luisa Santos, Janaína Tábula, Ludmilla Ramalho, among others. In addition to the performers, scholars such as Carlos Mendonça and Cristine Mello reflect on the works and themes presented, drawing parallels and opening new possibilities for interpretation.
In addition to the works, we are interested in an intrinsic link between video and performance, expanding the scope of poetic construction, enhancing performance actions, rearticulating the processes of signification and visually elaborating the idea of the body. The body appears as a place of public debate on crucial issues and is presented through art as a possibility of resistance and aesthetic and political innovation.
By shedding light on this infinite maze that can be the body, presenting works, performances, archives and interviews, the documentary unites discussions and records a period, mapping what it is, what it can be, what it thinks and does with and about the body these days.
